 The 3rd Annual 2008 ‘NZ Rock Paper Scissors Championships ’ (NZRPSC) Regional Qualifying Rounds begin in May with the NZ Qualifying Round & NZ National Final TAKING PLACE ON Friday 13th of June at the ‘Vesbar’, AUT, Auckland.

Along with a wealth of fame and admiration from RPS peers, some great prizes are up for grabs including trips to the NZ National Final for regional champs, &, a trip to the Gold Coast for the NZ champ along with the chance to secure the major prize of an overseas Trip for one to Toronto, Canada to attend and compete in the 7th annual 2008 World RPS Championships & vie for the title & the CAN$10,000.00 prize pool.
NZRPSC competition entry is free, unless charity fundraiser, and registration will be accepted on the day/night of competition. Players are encouraged to enter a team, themed if desired, or just fly solo.

 3rd Annual Pabst Blue Ribbon Philadelphia Rock Paper Scissors City League Championship Series Season to Kick Off April 14
The Philadelphia Rock Paper Scissors Championship Series Planning Committee is pleased to announce that the 3rd Annual Pabst Blue Ribbon Philadelphia Rock Paper Scissors City League Championship Series (PBRPRPSCLCS) will begin play on April 14, 2008. The PBRPRPSCLCS is looking to build upon the success of its’ first two seasons, in which over 1200 competitors have attended nightly events in the hope of becoming City League Champion, a title ultimately claimed in 2007 by player Baconshark of team David Bowie’s Package. This event is fully endorsed by the World Rock Paper Scissors Society, recognized as the governing body of the sport throughout the world. The PBRPRPSCLCS is pleased to welcome back Pabst Blue Ribbon, who will be returning as the Title Sponsor for the 3rd consecutive season.  RPS luminary custardchuk who runs the RPS-OZ office recently sent a beautiful postcard to Worldrps HQ. In addition to the kind greetings, it would appear that Australia has award RPS-OZ with its own special commemorative stamp or at least that RPS-OZ paid the right fee to the postal office to print off a few.
Anyway, we will take it is a huge honour to the grand sport of Rock Paper Scissors that it know has its own stamp. And here we thought the Aussie office spent all the RPS dues on beer.

 While Rock Paper Scissors has often been used as an executional device within a TV show, rarely has it been the central focus of the drama. Japanese Anime series Kaiji goes deep into the seedy world of gambling by following a down on his luck gambler Itoh Kaiji who, being 3 million yen in debt, decides to go on a mysterious gambling cruise that promises to erase the debts of the winners (and magnify the debts of the losers) through a series of gambling games.
What makes it interesting to us is that the first 9 episodes focus on an intense version of RPS called Gentei Janken or Restricted Rock Paper Scissors.  This version of RPS is most similar to Street RPS but with a twist. Each player starts with a total of 12 cards (4 of each throw) and 3 stars. Players then play each other for their stars with anyone earning enough stars getting the right to move to a safe room and the losers going even deeper into debt. A large screen keeps track of the cards played so players can get a general sense of the what cards are left. Like Street RPS, Restricted RPS has few rules beyond the basics allowing for plenty of subterfuge and deception which is where the drama really starts to get intense. By the time the RPS themed episodes are done, you will likely be hooked and wanting to watch the rest of the series. While the series loses its way midway through the season, it makes up for it later one with another diabolical card-based game that shares similar lines of thinking to RPS called E-card.
 Anime fans give this series a very high rating , so if you are new to this style of storytelling this is an excellent and entertaining introduction to the genre. You can watch the whole Kaiji series online at crunchyroll.com |

El Lissitzky was a master of the Russian Avant-garde and is credited as one of the founders of the Suprematist movement. His work directly influenced Constructivism which has played a large role in some of the most beautiful of the classic Russian propaganda that has always been an inspiration to us at Worldrps . So, in that spirit, we have a special post today which is a homage to El Lissitzky's About Two Squares Children's Story first published in 1922.

Although we hate to disappoint, we must admit that it is a nice feeling to find out that the feature Documentary Rock Paper Scissors: A Geek Tragedy by Mike McKeown has once again sold out* of advanced tickets at the Victoria Film Festival.Not only that, but it is listed as the "Most Visited Film" and is 2nd most "Top Scheduled Film" on the Buzz section of the festival's website. Is it simply the subject matter of RPS that is causing it to be the must-see film wherever it plays or is word getting around that it is actually a darn good film (see trailer here). We know it is the later, but we are guilty of being 100% biased. What will be interesting will be to see how the viewers rate the film afterwards.(In Calgary, it received an amazing 4.9 out of 5 stars over 131 votes). Principle subjects Douglas and Lisa Walker will be in attendance along with Producer Pat McKinnon and the esteemed Director himself Mike McKeown.
