My well-meaning but naive niece has forbidden her son to play with scissors.  Naturally, the school breaktime consequences are dire; with the good name of my family suffering into the bargain.  Does anyone know how I can persuade her to change her mind?

Any advice gratefully received.  (As are unfounded remarks from Custardchuk regarding the 'good name' of the House of Simpson expected.)

There is really nothing you can do to counter overprotective parents.  The more you attempt to intervene, the more such parents will perceive you as a threat against which their offspring must be protected.

I would recommend that you present her with a nice pair of child's safety scissors and offer to teach her son how to handle them properly.  Scissors, like any tool, are only dangerous when one is ignorant of how to use them safely.  Why, I was not only using scissors but running with them when I was a mere lad of five years, because someone took the time to teach me safe habits.

Excellent advice from Arbiter.  However, if your niece is recalcitrant, perhaps you can suggest another course of action to the lad.  If he explains his predicament to the other kids, perhaps he can get them to eliminate a throw from their repetoire as well.  If he can convince them to eliminate paper, he should only lose about 1/4 of his rounds (winning or tying with rock vs rock and scissors, winning or losing with paper vs rock or scissors.)

Once the lad reaches the legal age of competition (and self determination) he will have built up a massive head of steam for Exclusive Play (holding back one throw during a match.)  After years of not playing scissors, the pressure on his opponents should be palpable.

Best of luck to you both.

srn doesn't seem to realise that not everyone knows everything he knows.

An AAA is some kind of apprentice assignment that is usually given to a student by a Master. However, in this case srn decided to set one to his Master, himself and the other apprentice studying under his Master. It has no point, and only spams up the board further.

Although, to satisfy your curiosity, E-Card is a gambling game, like RPS in many respects, that is played in the animé series "Kaiji". Damn good show. King beats Citizen, Citizen beats Slave and Slave beats King.

I share your frustration, rhymeswithsausage.

Cheers,
