Been a while Wayne, school almost over for ya now?  Good luck with the tourney.

Nice to meet you Erkern, Erik, or Eric depending on what I'm reading here.  Welcome to the boards.

Still playing Franklint, but looking forward to the match chuk.  martin sucker punched me by suggesting the knuckle sandwich gambit.  Always been a fan of something like that, such as a song I wrote called "fistful of rings."  Damn, should've made that my avatar name, might have to change it.  Or perhaps a new RPS team...

Franklint, I actually thought you had already taken me down, which is why I didn't challenge you again.  In order to avoid the double-challenge, how about throwing one my way.

Mr.Cohrs,

Nice to meet you Erkern, Erik, or Eric depending on what I'm reading here.  Welcome to the boards.

Very pleased to meet you too, Sir.

Dont despair, I am known by many names.
Sometimes I wear a dark cloak and hat aswell, especially when going to town.

My name isn't of importance, it's what I can do for You gentlemen and ladies, and them later on what you can do for me that matters.

Thanks for the welcome back, this place really feels like a family...

so im not very sure how this is going to work...

do i just pick someone random from the list and challenge him?

and i hope this tournament isnt going to go on forever, lol..

Wayne,

Don't believe everything Mr. Rosh tells you. You can challenge players who are either 1 or 2 places from you in the ladder (either above you or below you). The rules can be found on this thread.

Based on your current position, you can challenge either Master Roshambollah or Erkern. Since neither of them are currently 'under challenge' from another player, if you decide to challenge one of them, you can send the first throw to the player as soon as you've challenged him.

21st June is the date to bear in mind, that's when the first awards will be given out.

A well designed and easy to understand page about the matches underway, and those coming up.
One hundred white doves packed up and sent in gratitude.

Gratefully received. Not sure what to do with them. 23 died in transit. And the smell when I opened the crate was, well, let's just say I'm not so afraid of custardchuk's 'thunder from down under' anymore. But anyhow, I appreciate the gesture.

Quote
Is every game only one round? Or, is a match several one-throw games? Or is one match just one one-throw game (which of course means, there's absolutely no difference between game and match, propably meaning aswell that a set equals one throw, which also actually makes up one game, and since a match is only one game... THAT in a very easy way explained what I believed was a tennis expression, the often spoken words: 'game, set and match'. It turns out this is an expression from RPS, I don't think the world knows that.)

For this ladder, a match consists of as many throws as it takes for one of the players to reach four points. For example, the throws from my recent match against Urbanus were:

martinburley S - P C Urbanus - martinburley wins
martinburley R - P C Urbanus - C Urbanus wins
martinburley P - S C Urbanus - C Urbanus wins
martinburley P - P C Urbanus - tie
martinburley R - S C Urbanus - martinburley wins
martinburley R - P C Urbanus - C Urbanus wins
martinburley R - S C Urbanus - martinburley wins
martinburley S - S C Urbanus - tie
martinburley S - P C Urbanus - martinburley wins

In that case, it took 9 throws for me to reach the four points required for victory. The quickest match possible would take four throws, with one player winning all four throws, for a 4-0 whitewash.

Seven days is not very long time to analyse, make a strategy, plan tactics, and then implement the plan. I humbly suggest that it be considered to extend the time for each move with one week?

Seven days is longer than you get in most tournaments. Wink Remember that you are allowed (a maximum of) seven days between each throw - the match itself may well take longer than seven days. Particularly if you play at Rosh's pace.

I am a big fan of efficiency, and I would like to thank Martin Burley for using the accepted abbreviated form of Master:  the common "Mr."

From Take Our Word for It:

Quote
Mr. is simply the abbreviation of master, used as a title, like Mrs.  The "mister" pronunciation arose simply as an alteration of master.  Rather like its female counterparts, the "mister" pronunciation stuck with Mr., while master retained its "master" pronunciation, and the two were considered distinct words, this by the 18th century.

They say that kids in the sport these days have no respect for their superiors.  I would like to complement Martin for his fine example: forging ahead into new strategic territory while still paying humble respects to the Masters of the Sport.  Many would be wise to follow his example.

Thanks, Mr. Rosh. Good to see you took my comment in good spirit.

(Only a cynic would suggest that I was using 'Mr.' in accordance with the Wikipedia definition.)

Quote
Mr (UK) or Mr. (USA) is an English honorific used for a man too old to be addressed as Master... and, supposedly, though not really in practice, above some undefined level of social status

Respect is as important in RPS as elsewhere. I'm reminded of the old Chinese saying, "Kill your enemy, but do so respectfully."

Many would be wise to follow his example.

Can't argue with that.

...And R Cohrs and I are finally done, and I managed to take the match home! It was a close, long game that finished at 4-3. Many stalemates showed much the same thought patterns going into our throws. Here's the (finally complete) throw record:
Franklint P vs S R Cohrs
Franklint P vs P R Cohrs
Franklint P vs P R Cohrs
Franklint R vs S R Cohrs
Franklint S vs S R Cohrs
Franklint P vs R R Cohrs
Franklint S vs R R Cohrs
Franklint R vs R R Cohrs
Franklint S vs S R Cohrs
Franklint S vs S R Cohrs
Franklint P vs. S R Cohrs
Franklint R vs. S R Cohrs
Franklint P vs. P R Cohrs
Franklint R vs. S R Cohrs

One interesting point, and for me the highlight of the match, was near the end, with R Cohrs' nicely-timed switch down from a run of four consecutive Papers. While his change didn't quite fool me into a loss, he forced a stalemate, drawing the game out longer.

I am about to respond to my pending challenge from Max. Looking forward to a fun and very educational match.

Thanks for the great game Cohrs. It really was anyone's match in many ways (although I'll admit I was pretty confident that I'd win the final throw). I'm sure we'll meet, and you can have your revenge.

Cheers,
Franklint

Congrats on your win, Franklint. If I had to pick out one throw from your match, it would be throw 12. You'd just gone 3-2 down with a Paper - Scissors loss, and were staring defeat in the face. You boldly picked R Cohrs to throw a fourth Scissors in a row, and you were right. I think it was vital for you to win that throw - a Scissors - Scissors tie, leaving R Cohrs 3-2 up, would have left all the pressure on you, whereas your win swung the momentum back to you at a crucial point in the match.

You're up to second in the ladder, which has now been updated.

Yep, you did it right, srn347. As no-one else has challenged him, you can now send him the first throw of the match. I've updated the 'current standings' thread to show that you have challenged him.

It seems Cohrs is more interested in playing Custardchuk than me, and I can't blame him as it'll be an easier match.

My challenge came back as ignored for one week.

How do I proceed Mr. Burley?
