RPS New Zealand are pleased to announce the opening of our newly-established Rock Paper Scissors Training and Resource Centre. Based in Christchurch, the purpose of this award-winning establishment is:

Quote from: The RPSNZRPSTRC
To provide state-of-the-art training facilities and resource materials to Rock Paper Scissors players of all levels.

The RPSNZRPSTRC offers:

  • Personalised coaching sessions
  • Focused training against skilled sparring partners
  • Group discussions of the latest RPS research
  • A convivial atmosphere for visiting professionals
  • Free accommodation for individuals or small groups
  • Activies to complement RPS (e.g. other strategic games)
  • Regular opportunities to compete at no-, low- or high-stakes RPS
  • A well-stocked library of RPS resources
  • A well-stocked shelf and fridge of alcohol

All this - and at absolutely no cost! RPSNZ is committed to RPS outreach, and believes that secretive, high-fee courses with disreputable trainers dishonor the game and are the RPS equivalent of Scientology. High-quality RPS training facilities and techniques should be available to all. The benefits to RPS as a sport, a game and a way of life from freely sharing many of our most advanced tactics, techniques and theories far outweigh the fripperies of fame and fortune that motivate less reputable coaches and course providers.

Any RPS players who are or will be in the South Island of New Zealand should feel free to contact RPSNZ for more information and a warm welcome. You want to throw well? We'll help you throw better!

That's what i would have thought, Urbanus, however I've personally visited the old headquarters and seen the new building. I was pleasantly surprised.
Had it just been Martin organising it probably would have been a ripoff and a dive but he is just the figurehead and the hard work is done by his management team behind the scenes.
I say well done to Martin for being clever enough to allow others to run it while he takes the credit.

High stakes games?  Sounds awesome.  I've got 1 American dollar on that.  That's several thousand kiwi dollars if I'm not mistaken.  I wouldn't mind some action right now, and a free accommodation sounds like a great deal.

The fact that the accomodations and training are free probably tells Clayton and myself all we need to know (I hesitate to speak for you, chuk, but in this case I know what you're thinking.)

There's an old saying among Professional RPS players; remember it longer than the names of your fathers:  "If it's free, I probably can't afford it."

Thanks, but no thanks, Martin.  I trust a cult where I know the cost up front to one where I pay at the door on the way out.

The well-stocked fridge and shelf of alcohol sounds promising, though.  When you're up to two shelves, I'll commission a fact-finding mission for Outreach.

Incidentally, chuk, I recently heard an interesting adjunct to the time-honored "If it's free, I probably can't afford it."  A client of mine and I were discussing print newspapers, and he made a very valid point.  "Production cost and profit for print newspapers are totally covered by advertisers," he noted.  "The revenue from subscriptions and single copy purchases is insignificant.  Why then aren't newspapers free?  Because," he continued, "if the newspapers were free, no one would read them.  The price on the front of the newspaper is there to create perceived value, and for no other reason."

One must meditate deeply on this.  I know I have.

There's a ton of free newspapers out there Rosh.  Not necessarily reputable ones, but I know the Riverfront times back in St. Louis was one of those.  I don't have a point at all.  Just saying.  I was a paperboy for about 5 years btw.  I recently had a nightmare that I was back in my old house and the papers were stacking up as I had forgotten to deliver them.

Your dream probably has more to do with a defecit of paper in your real life RPS game.  Have you been leaning on rock and scissors too extensively of late?

Just lost in one of the International World Series Tourney with two ill timed papers.  Played an almost paper exclusive match right before, 5 Papers and 1 Rock to win, as my opponent hadn't used scissors in his last 5 games.

Perhaps the problem is too much paper, as outside of RPS I've been suffocating under the paperwork demanded to return to Korea.  Or it might be a fear of bureaucracy in general, as my job (along with 100 others) and return to Korea was snuffed out 2 weeks ago by a bureaucratic process.  This situation was also run in the Korean Times Newspaper.

As of right now, paper is definitely the biggest issue in my life.  Lack of currency is causing me severe stress, and the answer to a job falls in waiting several weeks for a piece of paper to be returned to me.

Which would help explain things, except that the dream I was talking about was several months ago.  But the memory of it was sparked by the posts here, so I'm sure there's some kind of time spectrum subconscious shift happening as we speak.
