WELCOME, SEEKER...

Christie, I welcome you on behalf of the Outreach Ministry.  You are the first newcomer to our fair board in quite some time who doesn't seem to be a spam robot, or internet marketer, and I daresay that the Society as a whole is happy to see you.

Historically the "torronto world comp" (currently known as the "Yahoo! RPS Championship" formerly the "World RPS Championship" and the "International World Championship") is held in late October or mid-November.  The competition date is usually not known until about a month before the tournament, not because it is a closely guarded secret, but because the promoters are waiting for the ink to dry on the sponsorship agreement.

There is some doubt about whether or not the tournament will take place this year.  Usually, the tournament organizers fret and moan that "this is probably the last year"; this is taken by Professional RPS players as an omen that the tournament will indeed take place next year.  In 2009, there was no such naysaying, which concerns some of us. To stay up to date, you could consider signing up for the World RPS News feed (there's an RSS button on the main page at worldrps.com.)

Still, there's no reason to delay your training for the event until the last minute.  Most competitors still practice a bit during the offseason, with many taking part in strength building exercises or attending strategic seminars.  Perhaps your best course of action is to enroll in Roshambollah Learning Systems (tm).  With your annual membership you will receive 12 months of the best RPS training money can buy, and a significant discount on our Total Tournament Performance Package (TTPP). Former students of Roshambollah Learning Systems include Tasmania's Will "Franklint" Pridmore and 2009 World Champ Tim Conrad!*  Plus, for a limited time only, new posters to the Bull Board receive a 20% discount on the RLS/TTPP combination package.  All in all, it's the best money you'll ever spend on RPS, and will pay for itself in no time, guaranteed!**  As our slogan goes,

Roshambollah Learning Systems; "You Won't Be Sorry For Long"

Thanks again for your interest in the sport, and do not hesitate to ask if you have any further questions.

Yours, in the $pirit of Outreach,

Master Roshambollah

Another seeker here... So is the competition open to anyone? I've never competed professionally before, but a few friends and I might be interested in entering. The website is a little unclear, but it seems that anyone who pays the $25 pre-sale fee is allowed to compete- is that correct? Also, how long is the tournament? And is there free beer (or what price if not)? And is it guaranteed to be on a weekend?

abacus,

The World Championship (hopefully the Yahoo! Rock Paper Scissors World Championship) has never not been on a Saturday.  Take this as you will, but there is a pretty strong chance that this trend will continue in 2010 and beyond.

It is an open format tournament, so if you pay the entry fee (it varies, possibly determined by Wojek Smallsoa's gambling losses for the year) then you have a chance to be a the World Champion, or hopefully the Yahoo! Rock Paper Scissors World Champion.

Again, history tells us that the venue for the World Championship (or possibly the Yahoo! RPS World Championship) will be a place that makes most of their profits selling alcohol, so I wouldn't expect anything for free.  The cost at the door is strictly for the chance to become the World Champ or the Yahoo! Rock Paper Scissors World Champion.

Incidentally, if you play in or around Philadelphia, that Championship event does provide Pabst Blue Ribbon and Jim Beam once you qualify and pay the entry fee.
