My Fellow BullBoardians:

I recently received the following message from TGOTT (James Hayes) on Facebook:

Quote
Also, the MOtBB, would it be controversial if I ran this contest this year?

This "babe in the woods" question (rather "blood in the water') would seem ridiculous to many Bull Boarders; rare is the request for even a change in parking status from Lot A to Lot B without at least two months of heated discussion.

By way of provenance, I have hosted the MotBB for the last few years.  It hasn't always been fair, but it's been unfair to everyone equally.  I also have history on my side; I have hosted RPS tournaments for love of the sport even before those upstarts in Toronto started doing it for love of money.

Still, new blood can bring new ideas.  But is James the only one with new ideas?  Surely Maxamillion, host of SPRock and last year's MotBB champion, has his own ideas as to how an online tourney should be run?  C. Urbanus has more ongoing RPS experience than anyone, with the Philly City League; might he desire to throw his hat into the ring and run the 2010 MotBB?  How about Brad Fox?  He ran an exhaustive MotBB in 2005 (I think.)  What about Martin Burley?  Shouldn't he be given a chance to run his own event, seeing as online fantasy RPS is the only type of RPS at which is he proficient?

Good points, and though I'm more than happy to abdicate, I don't think we should just hand the reigns over to James Hayes, when there are so many other organizers with more time in the organization of RPS who may want to try their hand.  Then again, we don't want a situation like 2008, when the Board was thronged with a dozen competing MotBB tourneys, including Imak Nerrivik's "Subzero MotBB", Martin Burley's "*True" MotBB," the Midnight Rider's "True Authentic MotBB," Al Thorn's "Original MotBB," Stu Vessant's "Real" MotBB" et. al.

By right of succession, I claim authority over this year's MotBB tourney; after all, I've hosted it for the past three years.  However, I'd like to open the books for anyone else desiring to host this year's tourney.  I'll go ahead an enter my name into consideration again.  I've tried to uphold high standards for the event, while maintaining a dynamic tournament environment for the participants.  I have some new ideas for this year, which I'm really keen to put into practice, and I hope the Bull Board Massive will choose me again.

I will open consideration for hosting the 2010 MotBB tourney for one week.  Unlike many other nomination processes, you can only nominate yourself.  It's a lot of work, and I easily can see people nominating others out of a sense of revenge, rather than out of consideration for who best can run the event.  Please nominate yourself in this forum.  After one week, nominations will close, and I will set up a poll.  Neither myself, the World RPS Society or the 2010 MotBB tourney will be bound by the results, but it should give us a good idea of which way the wind's blowing.

Excelsior,

Master Rosh

Just  to confirm my interest in running the 2010 MotBB contest. My contest will revolve around the popular Pro's Vs Joes event that took place before Christmas, but tweaked to be suitable for play for single play rather than a team. but thinking by running this contest will be a chance to see if I have what I have to run a official contest. I did also ask Master Rosh that the winner of the contest would become the captain for the Pro's team in the next version of Pro's vs Joe's (the amateur players of the world series) if it was agreed. I would use the Roshambull system though due to my lack of experience on the other systems, but will have at least players lasting more than 1 throw. I am totally against straight Knockout formats over the internet in anything but a side distraction to the main event.

Surely not...

I nominate custardchuk. It would be nice for him to have a successful 2010, and given his dwindling form in the twilight of his career, his only hopes of success now are from successfully hosting a tournament, rather than as an entrant.

And, why not...

I also nominate myself. I am happy not to host it if people prefer a more standard tournament run by Rosh, TGOTT, or others, but I put my name forward in the interests of providing the voters with more choice.

If I am chosen, the 2010 MotBB will:

* Be a test of players' ability to compete in a variety of match formats (think of it as an RPS triathlon, rather than a straight knock-out)
* Not be played via Roshambull (due to the restrictiveness of their best-of-three format)
* Have colourful post-match analysis on many of the games, from myself and other invited commentators
* Have a prize

Well done, Martin.  Glad to have you on board.  The consumer, indeed, appreciates the illusion of choice.

I hesitate to accept your nomination of custardchuk.  Last I recall, you nominated him to act as your proxy in Toronto, and we all remember how that turned out...

My good friend custardchuk, last I heard, is busy traveling SE Asia in search of ladyboys.  This idle pastime shouldn't distract him overmuch from taking part in the 2010 MotBB, but it may preclude his ability to organize.

I was planning on soapboxing once all the nominations are in, but I think you're right; might as well campaign before the voting starts.

I have enjoyed tweaking the tournament format each year, and I promise anything but the "more standard tournament" alluded to by Martin, though I doubt that anything I have to offer will rival Martin's format in terms of complexity. I would, however, like to nominate myself to provide "colorful post-match commentary" should Martin run this year's MotBB.  I have more experience than anyone, in this regard.

Like Martin, I do not think Roshambull is the way to go for this year's MotBB (in deference to James, he should feel free to offer the 2010 MotBB "Captain" status of his "Pros vs Joes" promotion.  Also, as a point of order, the MotBB is still an online fantasy RPS tournament, and is not officially sanctioned or endorsed by the World RPS Society.)

More specifically, I plan to put a few different tournament formats to a vote by the competitors.  Among my current thoughts are the following:

- "Battle of the Scripts" : Each competitor submits a script (or scripts) to use against other opponents.  Use of specific scripts vs specific opponents is encouraged.

- "All vs One" :  All competitors play against a single mystery "celebrity" RPS  player.  If a competitor loses a throw, he or she is eliminated.  Contest continues until there is only one player left standing (not counting the "celebrity" player...I already have someone in mind, and no, it's not me.)

- "Telepathic RPS" :  Let's take things off-line.  The Midnight Rider's final 16 appearance at the World's this year proves that Telepathic RPS is a reality.  Each competitor will compete in real time via telepathic uplink (or can submit a script telepathically, if preferred.)  This format would make heavy use of the lessons learned from my short-lived RPS Broadcast! production.  I will be using a Thetamax 3.1 Broadband Telepathic Router (3.1 resolves some of the temporal phasing issues, and is, so I hear, the dominant platform of the future due to a pre-emptive strike against VPS in 2019.)  The tournament will be optimized for the Firestem (tm) Astral browser, but will work on most platforms.  This is actually my preferred format, but I will bend to the will of the competitors, if they favor me to run the event this year.

Like Martin, I plan on offering a valuable RPS prize, most likely something out-of-print, or several somethings.  Winner may have to pay cost of shipping.

So that's about it.  Nominations will run for a week, then we'll see what we have.

Thanks for the Opportunity Rosh.
I would like the honour of running the Motbb 2010 event.
However I will have to chip out.
I feel My level of expertise in the veriety of arena's & formats & post match commentary is not yet up to the standard i would like the Motbb event to demonstrate.

Franklint in the other hand, with his bright young mind & Will 'o' Wit comments ability would be a good contender for the honour.
So i nominate Franklint for the role. (Although I have not asked him if he wants nominating)

Haveing said that I like the idea of Master Roshambolah incorporating a version of SPRock 1 into the MotBB event.
It would be good to see how an expert runs this style of tourney over the internet.

Haha, thanks Max. I'm flattered.

Unfortunately, due to school commencing in one week, I would probably not be able to find the time to run such an important tournament. Plus, for such a prestigious event, I don't think that my name is suitably famous (yet) to be attached to the MotBB.

Good luck to all applicants!

Cheers,

I have returned and can safely say that there are no Ladyboys in Asia. If anything, it is the opposite. The place is full of gorgeous, tall, husky, square shouldered women.

i refuse to accept martinburleys nomination to take on an administration position. Players make good players and administrators make good administrators and that's where it stops.

To that end all three remaining candidates are well qualified to run this.

I'll be voting for whoever offers the biggest purse.

regards
custardchuk
