The World RPS Society throughout its history has always been a big believer mass communications to help further develop the appeal of RPS as a game, sport and the ultimate non-biased decision-maker. Clear, simple and strong messages that focus on different aspects of the game have been the hallmark of the WRPSS communications. Analyzed in retrospect though, it is facinating to look at the history of the Society as told through these posters. Analyzed in retrospect though, it is facinating to look at the history of the Society as told through these posters. Often the story behind the images provides us with the even more fasinating historical perspective of the internal struggles the WRPSS has endured over the years.
A perfect example of this can be illustrated in two popular images from the past Rise Above Conflict - 1972
Three players stand together at Sunrise ushuring in a new era for RPS. The message is that by following RPS thought, man can transend the need for conflict prior to it becoming an issue. This execution struck a chord with many who found the message appealing but it was critiized by hardliners within the WRPSS for not having a strong enough "call to action" and that 'rising above conflict' was too soft a message and therefore not worth communicating.
Call to Arms - 1972 As a reaction against the Rise Above Conlict execution which was felt to lack a strong "call to action", hardline members of the World RPS Society developed "Call to Arms" as a pointed counterpoint. Gone are the happy smiles and sunshine moments of Rise Above Conflict, instead they have been replaced with this more hard-edged look that coldly seperates each player into their own seperate box backed by blazing colour. The bold headline charges ahead and commands the viewer to take action with RPS.
It is interesting to compare the two images side by side as the hardlines went as far as to get a bit cheeky by changing the throw that each of the characters is holding in Rise Above Conflict to the to throw that beats it in Call To Arms. While this particular subltly was lost on most viewers, it sent a clear message to the soft-leaning element within the Society that the hardliners were back...with a vengeance
