Having reached both an advanced level of play and an advanced degree in geology, I have found myself in a quandary with regards to the definition of rock.
My associates and I have conducted tests which prove beyond doubt that Muscovite and Striated Kaolin (among other minerals) are incapable of smashing scissors.
Furthermore, even plastic round-nosed scissors (the sort we use here at the lab) are able to cut through the above mentioned earth materials.
One colleague has observed that native lithium, while rare on earth, would have a devastating effect on paper in an O2 atmosphere.
My question essentially is: What type of rock are we using?
