: In 'Stinging' the punishment befalls the player who is unluckyrather than unskillful, or so it seems to him, for he has failed to guess the other player's mind. The two contestants flash their fingers at each other, usually making one of the three finger formations used in "Odd Man Out" and "Ick Ack Ock" thus, fingers clenched (stone), fingers flat out (paper), and two fingers stretched out and kept apart (scissors). In a number of places, however, for example, Edinburgh, Norwich and Petersfiled, they also make the signs "rain", bunching their fingers and pointing them downwards, and "fire", pointing their fingers upwards. Rain puts out fire and rusts scissors while fire burns paper and blackens stone. The rock, paper, scissors variety is most common. Whoever wins each time wets his first and second fingers by licking them, pulls back his opponent's sleeve, and smacks his bare wrist good and hard, an operation which is more painful than those who have not experienced it might imagine. Play then resumes until one boy or the other has had enough. This game, like "Slappies" is prevalent in boarding schools. One informant tells us that on occasion it becomes an obsession in a classroom or dormitory, and some people's wrists, after a run of losses, would be "absolutely bloody red"; yet they will not give in because they hope to start winning and make the other person suffer. When girls play the game they usually agree that a player must win three times before she has the privilege of giving a slap.
